What was your experience with your first-time GNU/Linux usage?

GNU/Linux appeared in a computing world that was dominated by
the degenerate corps of Microslop/Apphole.

So how did you first choose and install GNU/Linux?

My story:

I was a student at UM and, through the grapevine, I heard
of this new OS that was making big waves in academic circles.
After some research, I decided to try it out. After all,
I had a strong academic background in CS and digital hardware
engineering.

To my great surprise, there was a small company offering
Mandrake (now Mandriva) CD disks for sale in the nearby
city of Port Huron, MI. On one dreary, rain-soaked evening
I drove the 60 miles to the location, which was in a tiny
riverside mall. I was met by a somewhat dwarfish individual
and we talked for a bit about installation. I paid the
29.95 (IIRC) and then left.

The CD included a thick paper-bound manual. After reading
and installing and then watching that cursor flicker on the
terminal screen I was fucking hooked.

This is how computing is supposed to be!

Since then I have created my own GNU/Linux distro which
is probably the fastest and most efficient in the world.

Nothing can beat GNU/Linux. Nothing. (Provided that you
have the fucking know-how which most of the world does not.)

So now post your fucking first experiences.

I said, POST.

Can't you fucking hear? POST!

I first tried Linux when a guy at work gave me a RedHat 5 (not RHEL 5)
disk. I got it installed, but did not know how to get X to work.
Then I bought a book that had a RedHat 6 disk, and the GUI came
up automatically.

After awhile I weaned myself from the GUI and now mostly use the command-line.

The command is fine but what if you want to do image processing or
video editing or math graphics?

The best solution is to use a simple window manager and lots of
virtual terminals. This provides the best of both worlds.

DEs (i.e. desktop environments) are for brain-dead idiots.

Ha. That's the first Linux that I installed and deployed at work,
too.

It was a long time ago, but I'm pretty sure that with my RedHat 5
disk, the GUI came up automatically. What I bought was big fat RedHat
5 reference book, and it came with the CD.

I don't know if that's the one you had but 'Red Hat Linux Unleashed' was
pretty good. As was common back then the damn thing was 2" thick with a
lot of info on the care and feeding of Linux and the common apps of the
day.

I haven't been in the local B&N brick and mortar store in a long time but
programming books killed a lot of trees. Xlib/Xt/Motif was a whole
bookshelf by itself and we only had up to 6A and 6B. I think there was
more.

Uh, using the command-line to launch GUI apps?

Uh, that's pretty much what I do. Fluxbox, urxvt/xfce4-terminal, and tmux.

> DEs (i.e. desktop environments) are for brain-dead idiots.

Nah, they're a convenience for some.

Anyway, by weaning myself from the GUI, I meant stuff like stopping the
usage of RedHat's system configuration app (a GUI) and using the GNU
unix-like toolset instead. Same with GUI file managers.

Using cdargs I can jump to a particular directory quickly. And with
command-line history it's easy to re-do a command, or, with the fc command, a
range of commands. With tmux I can have multiple terminal sessions without
taking up the entire screen.

But enough about me :-D

Why would you want tmux? Just open 2, 3, 5, 10 xterm virtual
terminals.

If you need more screen "real estate," just use fvwm3 virtual
desktops. You can have NINE VDs that will literally boggle
your puny mind.

Whatever you say, kid :-D

I have 4 virtual desktops running in Fluxbox.

Wow. Do tell more! This is so exciting!
it's even more exciting than listening to my aunt talk about her
gallstones. And believe me you that was exciting!

For YOU it must be very exciting. After all, you have read
every single word of every single post.

But in an attempt to deny that you are an empty, useless
sad-sack of a man, you will pathetically attack a sincere
post.

Who the fuck do you think that you are fooling?

You are a decrepit fucking loser from the get go and
any moderately intelligent user can easily know that.

Does your girlfriend/wife agree with you assessment?

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

You have nothing in your life save a shaving mirror
for your vanity.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
