That's another thing that declines with age, hence the 220 - age rule of
thumb for you maximum rate although it may not have much of an impact.

It's pretty easy to tell when you're getting close. It's like doing wind
sprints or HIIT training. You reach a point where you can't continue at
that rate. You don't have to feel your wrist for your pulse -- you can
hear it in your ears.

Like I said it's nerd data and not terribly useful.
