I need an app to turn off the whole phone after user-selected time.

I have used Tune-in, complete with all its advertising, to play webraido
for a user-selected time up to 120 minute and turn off, but I'd like the
phone to turn off completely.

Because some people, but not especially on this ng, think one should
only post after googling, at which time you often no longer need to
post, I googled first, and found one app*** that seems to require
installing the accessiblity app and then writing code to use it! I can
do that with enough time but I was hoping for somethig a lot simpler.

***It's called Timed Shutdown. It's very complicated. Just wanted to
comment on one strange thing. It required installing accessibilty, and
when i did that,
on my Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro running iiuc Android v11
the little man with outstretched arms icon for accessibilty appeared on
the very bottom line at the far right, which is fine, but in the bottom
row of app icons, which had 4 default icons, the right-most was Camera,
and it disappeared, leaving only 3 of them (Phone, text, Chrome)!!! I
finally found the Camera icon several pages into my phone.

I don't use an app to do that but I understand your question, I think.

My first thought to help you would be tasker/automate but they take work.
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.llamalab.automate>
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm>

Even I don't feel like figuring out how to automate that stuff, so that's
only my first guess at an answer.

My second guess will be based on a search... which I'll run for you now.

Note: I probably am the best on this newsgroup for searches for free apps
with no ads, but I haven't tested these apps so you need to test the
no-root one below.

I just found them for you but it seems the best apps require root.
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.reachcoding.timetoshutdown>
(Some engines say it's in the Google Play Store, but others don't.)

What do you think about this no-root shutdown-timer app?
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maforn.timedshutdown>

Note: I have not tested these apps (and my phone isn't rooted).

Mine says not found but I searched on timedshutdown.

I should have searched on Shutdown after I found the first app.

So I did:
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=time+to+shutdown&utm_source=opensearch&c=apps

but so far, no cigar.

The first one, you suggest below. discussed below***.

The seoond one, with an on/off icon in red and black says:
Shutdown (no Root)
About this app: Call the original factory's Power menu. (Some
models may not support the reboot feature). Reduce the burden of the
power button. (This app doesn't have "Power On" feature)
So this is no good.

There were 1 or 2 more just like this. First of those had the same icon
with the colors reversed!

Then comes
Cozy Timer - Sleep timer
About this app, *What is this app? If you fall asleep while
listening to music or watching a video, it will stop playback.
No good. I want to turn off the phone. i already have "stop
playback".

Then comes
Phone Restart (No Root)
About this app; Everyday your phone needs rest. So if you restart/reboot
your phone the its get refressed and work properply. But sometimes you
may have faced the power button is not working or your power button is
broken.
I would have thought remaining off would be an option, but no mention
of it, plus this is not timer based anyhow. There's another one like
this.

Several of the others are only audio and vido or only screen. I
remember now that I did see them the last time.

>Note: I have not tested these apps (and my phone isn't rooted).

>What do you think about this no-root shutdown-timer app?

*** Don't remember seeing this one before.

Timed Shutdown [No Root]
About this app; Are you used to turning off your phone before going
to sleep and want to listen to some relaxing music?
With this app, you won't have to move your sore arms and fingers, you
can just set a timer, and the phone will turn off after a while!

Sounds good. (same icon but in blue and black, LOL) reviews mixed but
that's normal.

Wait, when I go to install it, it says "Install on more devices"
meaning I've installed it, and on the current phone. Oops, it's the one
I mentioned in my first post. No wonder one says "It took me some time
to figure it out to set it up", but they all give it 2 to 5 stars.

Two of them say "Works on vertical screen but not horizontal, as viewing
a movie." That's strange, but probably won't bother me, but there are
the problems installing it that I've already had. Maybe those who were
successful are more skilled than I am.

Apparently this is not an easy task or this app would be simpler, not
require accessiblity, not require writing a script; and the other apps
would do more than turn off the sound or the screen, and the ones that
turn off the phone would include a timer.

I'll see what I can do with this one. Thanks.

"350+ actions ". I'm getting dizzy just thinking about that. Mayber
I'll just skip this idea. But I didn't know about tasker before and
it's good to know.

I've used automate because it's free and tasker is not free.
But both take effort.

In addition to tasker & automate, there's also macrodroid but it has ads.
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arlosoft.macrodroid>

As Andy said, Tasker is the normal goto app for Android automation.

There's a difference between a timed shutdown after lack of activity and an
automatic shutdown at a certain time, but I ran a tasker search for micky.
<https://www.google.com/search?q=android+tasker+timed+shutdown>

Some hits...

This is not possible since no user installed app is allowed to turn off
the phone by itself.

There may be settings to do this in your phone - but this is not a
generic Android setting but a vendor specific addition, like this:

Quote:

"Android does not have any simple way to power off the phone without
root, so the best we can do is emulate the manual gestures used to shut
down the phone. To do this, the app will use the accessibility
permission, but it will not register any user's data."

As I explained in another post: user installed apps are not allowed to
shut down the phone. This app tries to register itself as accessbility
tool to be able to emulate the neccessary input to shutdown the phone.
This may work - but it depends on your device.

Okay.

I guess I was spoiled by all my clock-radios.

I havent' seen any such setting, but iiuc they keep updating the phone
and they don't tell users what new features are hidden deep in menus.

It's funny that they write this article as if it works for nearly
everyone.

Yeah, that was going to be tricky, emulating manual gestures. It
wouldn't be so bad to just let the phone stay on all night. Other
people do it. I'm probably going to be using the remote bluetooth
speaker, one of the two I posted about in another thread, and I have no
way to turn that off automatically. So leavign the phone itself on will
be the same.

The first two we had unplugged any 110v device plugged into them.

I was had refrained from asking, but what does iPhone do in this
situation.

I don't understand. A clock radio was something that woke you up with an
alarm or the radio which you needed to switch off manually. I don't know of
any with sockets that get "unplugged".

What situation? You can't plug-in devices on an iphone.

They didn't pull the plug out but they turned off the power to whatever
was plugged into the 110v socket in the back of the 110v clock radio.

They simultaneiously turned off the radio if the radio was on, but they
didn't turn off the clock, no matter what.

Can you set an iPhone to turn itself off after a pre-set length of time.
Android may not do this but it doesn't seem to violate any inherent
rule.

A "clock-radio"? I know "clock-radio" as a device which contains a clock
and a radio and you can set a time to turn off the radio part
automatically - for example after 1 or 2 hours. But the device itself
will of course still be turned on, just the radio reception and audio
playback will stop. So not that different from an Android device with a
radio app which will automatically stop playing after 1 or 2 hours.

As I said, plus any 110volt device plugged into the outlet in the back
will also stop, completely.

Yes, not the same as what I wanted for android, but you can easily
arrange for a Windows computer to turn off completely, as completely as
if you did it manually. So it's not an electronic certainty that Android
devices can't do the same, turn off as completely as if it were done
manually. I'm surprised that they can't do so simply.

Not sure. I checked automator and there is a "shutdown" option, so it
should be possible.

Yes, because in Windows program do not run within a sandbox where they
don't have access to the underlying system as in Android. Therefore you
need root access for this and *maybe* an app which is registered as
accessibility helper is also allowed to do that, but I wouldn't count on it.

I tested this yesterday and I can set up an automation to shutdown the
phone, but it has a confirmation box you have click before it'll shutdown.

Doesn't look like it's possible completely automatically.
