Your Old iPad Could Get You a New Pixel Tablet for Free
https://lifehacker.com/tech/your-old-ipad-could-get-you-a-new-pixel-tablet-for-free

Google is offering a trade-in program for your old Samsung or Apple tablet,
and depending on the model you're giving up, trading in your tablet gets
you a Pixel Tablet for free: You just pay the tax.

Google will accept an iPad as old as the iPad 6, which launched in 2018.

If it's in good shape, your credit will be $399, which happens to be the
price of a base-model Pixel Tablet.

Even if the iPad is beat up, if it turns on, you'll still get $200 for it.

Seeing as a renewed iPad 6 goes for $164 on Amazon right now, that's a
great deal. What's interesting is $399 appears to be the maximum Google
will offer you for any iPad: Whether you have a good condition iPad 6 or
the latest 12.9-inch iPad Pro, you get $399 for it.

Whether you think it's worth giving up even a six-year-old iPad will depend
on how you feel about getting a 128GB Pixel Tablet without the dock. If you
want to upgrade to 256GB of storage, can pay only the $99 difference after
your trade-in (again, plus tax). If you upgrade to the 128GB tablet with
the dock, same thing. If you go all out and upgrade the dock tablet with
256GB of storage, you'll pay $199, rather than the MSRP of $599.

The only catch is you need to pay for the Pixel Tablet in full at the time
of purchase. Google will send you a mail-in kit for your old tablet, and
following an inspection, will rebate you the agreed-upon trade-in value. At
the end, you can net a new Pixel Tablet for only the tax, as long as you're
fine with parting with your old iPad.

Sounds like Google is desperate. You don't see Apple accepting trade-ins of
Google tablets for iPads, do you?

Because iPads actually sell. Apple owns the tablet market for a reason.
Google is in the "other" category in tablets, and around 3% in phones.

IOW, they are nothing in hardware sales. Gee I wonder why? Such a nice,
trustworthy company!

Maybe because most people would rather have a 6 year old iPad than a new,
"free" Google anything.

Apple does take some Android phones as a trade-in option on any new
Apple device. It doesn't specifically mention Android tablets, but they
may also be eligible as trade-ins - the FAQ on the website does say:
"You can trade in many Apple and third-party devices, including
Samsung and Google smartphones, for a trade-in credit or an
Apple Gift Card. If your device isn’t eligible for any trade-in
value, you can still recycle it with Apple for free."
<https://www.apple.com/shop/trade-in>

Apple resellers may have their own trade-in deals too.

What's no longer shocking is these ignorant Apple religious zealots feel a
mere marketing gimmick (which applies to Samsung tablets also, by the way)
is... somehow... an affirmation that "Android tablets suck".

Makes no sense, right?

Nobody with any brains would say that buying a Google tablet, and trading
in a Samsung tablet, means that "Android tablets suck in comparison" to
iPads.

Only these ignorant uneducated Apple religious zealots would say that.
*Based on nothing but a marketing gimmick.*

Reality?

A marketing gimmick is reality?

Are you nuts?

What's no longer shocking is these uneducated ignorant Apple zealots
actually believe that a mere marketing gimmick is reality.

I got a handful of free Samsung A32-5G phones from T-Mobile long ago.
<https://i.postimg.cc/YC1B906F/tmopromo01.jpg> A32-5G & iPhone 12 contract
<https://i.postimg.cc/Xq5SpS4D/tmopromo02.jpg> $15/mo iPhone,$0/mo Android
<https://i.postimg.cc/nhpbcP50/tmopromo04.jpg> $100 for 6 lines + $16 fees

As part of the marketing gimmick, I had to trade in a phone. Any phone.
Even a flip phone. All the phone had to do was light up when turned on.
And not have a broken screen (where everyone has a drawer full of them).

Hmmmm.... *each flip phone turns into a powerful Android Galaxy phone*, JR.

Does that mean to you that Samsung is competing with flip phone technology
and that flip-phone technology is winning out against them, Jolly Roger?

It does?
Really?

You are seriously that uneducated and ignorant that you really think that?

No wonder the world calls you iSheep ignorant religious zealots, JR.

Only you completely uneducated Apple religious zealots nutcases would ever
firmly believe that every marketing gimmick out there is reality.

You read into every marketing trick in the book some sort of Koran-like
presence of your God, such that you've lost touch with reality JR.

_NEWS FLASH!_

Apple doesn't accept Android tablets.

1. It doesn't accept Android in general, but rather a subset that only
includes Samsung, Google, and two OnePlus models.

2. None of the accepted devices are tablets.

I ask the same question of iPads that I ask of iPhones, given there isn't
any useful functionality on iOS that isn't already on Android long ago.

But you're welcome to prove that assessment wrong by providing facts.

Be an adult, Jolly Roger, for once.

If you claim that an iPad has more functionality than an Android tablet,
simply state one functionality that iOS can do that Android can't do.

Name just one.

I knew you couldn't name a single useful functionality on iOS that isn't
already (usually long ago) on Android, Jolly Roger.

That's because there's nothing on iOS that doesn't exist on Android.

The reason is simple, logical and all Apple's doing:

1. Developers provide most of the functionality on any device.
2. Apple severely restricts the functionality developers can provide.
3. Google can't.

The result is Android does thousands of things iOS can't do.
And yet, there's nothing on iOS that isn't already on Android.

The Apple tablet is just a toy.
A dumb terminal.

Just like the iPhone is.

The main reason the iPad can't do what Android tablets do
is rather simple and has all to do with Apple's walled garden.

1. Developers add most of the functionality on any given device
2. Apple severely limits the functionality developers can provide
3. Google can't.

So, for example, even though Google doesn't provide a free
ad free system-wide firewall, with Android you can install it.

Likewise with a YouTube clone that has Google spyware removed.
And likewise with a Chrome clone with Google spyware removed.

Google can't stop developers from giving people what they want.
Apple does.

It actually could, but prefers not to do so: I do not have to use the
Play Store to install apps, I can use alternative stores or just apk
files because Google lets me do it, it's just a switch in settings and I
can install apps from unknown sources. They could remove that switch in
coming versions of Android, but I'm quite sure they won't.

You're right in some ways but there's more to the story so allow me to
flesh out your correct statements above so that others learn from it.

First off, you _can_ download apps from the Google Play Store without
setting up a Google Account on your phone. It's called "Aurora".
<https://gitlab.com/AuroraOSS/AuroraStore/-/releases>

Aurora is nothing more or less than a Google Play Store client clone.

That means you get EXACTLY the same apps since it's just an open-source
playstore client that uses the Google Play Store repository for apps.

You get those apps with anonymity.
And yet the Google Play Store antivirus still does its daily scans
(if you want it to).

And it still scans the app upon installation (if you want it to).
And the Aurora client auto-updates all the APKs off Google Play Store repo
(if you want it to).

In addition, the bonus is that the Aurora store playstore client has better
filters than does the Google Play Store client and the Aurora store
playstore client SAVES the APK by default for reuse (if you want it to).

Notice this is stuff people want that Google won't give you but which
generous developers of open source apps give you for free without ads.

Now, Google could try to put an end to this open source google play store
client, especially since the code is open source, Google knows exactly what
it does and exactly how it gets the apps off of the Google Play Store repo.

But Google doesn't do that. Just as Google knows exactly what the YouTube
client NewPipe does, since it too is an open-source client that doesn't
need you to create a Google Account on your Android phone either.
<https://newpipe.net/>

Again, notice that the NewPipe youtube client does many things the YouTube
client doesn't do such as download and rip videos and subscribe to channels
without needing to create a Google Account on the Android device too.

These are NOT "alternative" stores. They're _exactly_ the Google store.
a. Auroa is NOT an alternative store - it's EXACTLY the Google data.
b. NewPipe is NOT an alternative store - it's EXACTLY the Google data.

So you're right that Google could try to put a stop to these clients,
but they don't. Probably they can't (for legal reasons) but they don't.

Mind you there are many alternative Google apps such as the Ungoogled
Chromium app which is not on the Google Play store but which can be
obtained outside which would be an alternative repo as you speak of.
<https://github.com/ungoogled-software/ungoogled-chromium-android>

In summary, since Google allows you to install any app you want to from
anywhere you want to get it from, you end up with more functionality than
you would have had with only using the limited functionality Google apps.

Which is why I accurately posit:
1. Developers create most of the functionality on your phone
2. Apple severely limits what developers can provide to you
3. Google can't (or if they could, they don't)

This is why it's always going to be the case that
A. There is nothing an iOS device can do that Android doesn't already do
B. Yet there is a lot of useful functionality the iOS device can't do

Those are all facts.
My assessment of those facts is that the iPhone/iPad is nothing but a toy.

Worse... almost all the nice things are inside the walled garden, which
means they require an Apple tracking account to use them, and which means
that you're logging into Apple's tracking servers every moment of your
life.

With Android, you don't even need an account on the phone or tablet and it
works just fine. I haven't had an account on the device for years, and I do
probably far more than most people do on a phone.

I also have iPads & iPhone but they are crippled in what they can do.

People who don't know that don't have any clue what functionality is on
Android that no iPhone or iPad can do - which is why there is no iPad in
the world that can do what even the least expensive Android tablet can do.
