I'm sure the 4GB is *RAM*, i.e. main memory (volatile 'storage') not
Internal Storage (permanent, non-volatile storage)!

So you're comparing apples with oranges.
Your current phone has 1GB RAM, so the upgrade has *4 times* that. So
you pay more to get more, not less.

See the "Memory and storage" section of your reference:

<https://www.phonemore.com/specs/samsung/galaxy-a2-core/sm-a260f/>

Anyway, post a link to the specs and price of the "upgrade" so we know
what we're talking about.

The 4-6GB is clearly *RAM*, not (permanent) Internal Storage. I've
replied to Steve about that mixup.

OTOH, my first phone (Android 4.1.1) *did* have 4GB Internal Storage,
with a whopping 1GB (if that) being 'free' for additional apps, etc.!

Ridiculous. There is something strange here. Ah, it will be RAM, as
Frank says.

Please say exactly what model you are being offered.

How do you know OP is in Africa? I also don't get why they're saying that
the current 8GB models are more expensive than their current 16GB one was.

That's what I suspect too, but Alan has found examples that do exist for
same.

Thank you. That is the kind of information I was looking for. The
information in the catalogue is very sketchy.

Storage can be 64 or 128 or 256 GB, depending on the model.

RAM can be 3 or 4.

The terminology in the ads is not very clear, thank you for your
clarifications.

They refer to RAM and ROM.

I assumed that the ROM contained the operating system and apps that
were factory-installed, and that it would not be available for apps
that are downloaded and installed later, since it is "read-only" and
therefore could not be subsequently written to.

The one I mentioned before here:

<https://www.gsmarena.com/realme_note_50-12799.php>

is said in the ad to have 8Gb, being 4Gb + 4Gb "dynamic" RAM, whatever
that means.

It's R1900, which is about £82.37 or $US104.60

For the OP, I only have cheap phones ('cuz I get them for free, that's
why), but even so, nowadays, as others said, 64GB of internal storage is
pretty normal stuff as is an sdslot so that you can add much more.

Dunno what an sd card costs in South Africa but here, in the states, you
can get a 128GB sd card off of Amazon for a bit over ten bucks or so.

That's exactly what's in my phone, a Samsung Galaxy A32-5G:
1. 64 GB of internal storage
2. 128 GB of portable storage (I used to only have 64GB for years)

That works fine for me, and I consider myself pretty typical when it comes
to storage needs - but let me look up how much RAM is on my phone for you.

Settings > Battery & device care > Memory
3) 4GB memory (1.2 GB Available)

What I love about being kind hearted enough to help people, I learn stuff
accidentally. I apparently have a setting for "RAM Plus" whatever that is.
<https://www.simplymac.com/android/what-is-samsung-ram-plus-is-it-worth-it>
"Samsung RAM Plus is a feature found in certain Samsung smartphones
that creates virtual RAM by using a portion of the device's internal
storage to provide extra temporary memory when the actual RAM is
running low."

I didn't even realize this existed until I looked for the OP, where my "RAM
Plus" has the option of "2GB" or "4GB" and mine is already set to 4GB.
4) 4GB RAM Plus

I'm not sure how to interpret that reality, but if I guess based only on
knowing that it exists, I guess I have 4GB of RAM but if the phone thinks
it needs 8GB of RAM, it will take the latter out of my internal storage.

Who knew?
Not me.

Anyway, for the OP, I consider that low-end phone perfectly fine for my
needs. What does it cost now? Dunno. It was probably less than two hundred
bucks when it was brand new three years ago.

If you look closely it says it's available with 64/128/256 GB of storage.
At a minimum it has 4x the storage of your current phone.

Unfortunately, it looks like inflation has made things much more expensive
in SA.

Mine had 0.5GB ram and 0.5GB flash, I bought a 2GB sdcard and used
custom kernels to move partitions around ...

It's some kind of virtual memory trickery, not sure if it uses
compression or just pages stuff between ram and flash?

I doubt the adds mention ROM.

The link you posted <hayesstw@yahoo.com> does not mention ROM, for instance.

It is RAM and Flash. Your advert doesn't even say flash, but it is flash.

Memory Card slot microSDXC (dedicated slot)
Internal 64GB 3GB RAM, 64GB 4GB RAM, 128GB 4GB RAM, 256GB 4GB RAM

In this case, ROM is a dumb and incorrect term. It isn't Read-Only
Memory, because it's Internal Storage, so - besides the operating system
and factory-installed apps - is stores additional apps and data. (BTW,
also part which stores the operating system and factory-installed apps
can be written/re-written, so also that part is not 'ROM'.)

Some people/sources call it flash-memory, but I think that's a bad
term as well, because it describes the technology, instead of what it
does/is.

Your new reference (<https://www.gsmarena.com/realme_note_50-12799.php>)
says "storage" and "Internal". Those are the normally used terms, i.e.
"Storage" and "Internal Storage".

Thanks for your help, and I didn't know that either.

If the ad had said flash, I would have found it easier to understand.
But it said ROM.

For example, it says the the Samsung A05s has 4GB RAM 64GB ROM

Can't be arsed.

I'd have to take a photo of the paper catalogue, find somewhere to put
it online, and then send you the link, and you probably wouldn't be
able to read it anyway because of the poor definition.

Ok.

Well, it is very curious. Samsung own page doesn't say how much rom the
Samsung A05s has, but it says it has 64 GB of storage, and that is the
flash memory.

But it can lead to misunderstandings -- it certainly did in my case.
