A wooden discipline paddle is like any other object; they can be abused.
That does mean, let alone prove, that paddling misbehaving children is
always immoral. Some of the alternatives, such as filling their little
bodies with pyschiatric drugs, can have lifelong consequences. Sore
bottoms heal much sooner than do damaged livers and/or kidneys.

I disagree. It breaks the hysterical cycle and lets her calm down and then
you can have a rational discussion. Granted, the child is quite old, so
this should no longer be necessary _if_ this has been done correctly
earlier.

I've seen many children who completely lose control and parents try to
talk to them which is meaningless. A light slap will break the hysterical
cycle, and then you can have a conversation.

I do not see the light slap as abuse.

I agree with physical injury. But in the video it was (I think) a light
slap with a spatula and that can hardly be classified as abuse and the
intent is to break the hysteria.

Just with people who panic you slap them lightly in the face, exactly the

I agree with Michael. And based on my own experience in childhood, and my
parents, it works. Also note that it is self correcting.

The last time my mother slapped me was when I slapped her back (with equal
force). Then she never again did it and we were "even" and after that we
had adult conversations when we disagreed.

It reminds me of the libertarian problem of children. When do they cease
to be the responsibility of the parents in a purely libertarian world?
When they move away from home and start to live their own life (is one
answer). That's when they prove that they are individuals who take
responsibility for their own lives.

This thread about hitting children is interesting in a deeper sense. In
todays world (especially in sweden which is very advanced in form of
wokeness) there are only childrens rights, and few people dare contradict
a child.

I think this stunts and damages the child and makes them less able to
become working adult people who take responsibility for their own lives.

When I teach I see it all the time with younger people (19-23). They
expect everything and do not put in any work themselves. They cannot
tolerate critique and become hysterical for the smallest trifles.

Of course not all, but the above is certainly a trend I see.

I think the philosophy of the minority, where politically minorities rule
and can never be criticized has poisoned parenting, and it is poisoning
society as a whole.

No matter the philosophy, deep down the child knows he or she is not

I may have hated and feared that slipper in my father's hand, but one

administer it!

I have no idea. She slapped me, so I slapped her. Logical, easy, and it
permanently solved the problem for me.

I just don't get it.

If the mother wanted to impose physical punishment, then she should have
taken her daughter to a bed with soft blankets and forced her to bend over
its side with her arms extended facedown in a soft pillow. Two or three
firm swats to her daughter's bottom could begin the dialogue, and, if
necessary, mom could "rinse & repeat" if she is not satisfied with her
daughter's answers and/or attitude.

As for the choice of a paddle, fenestrated wooden ones are the safest, not
only for the caregiver, but especially, the child, as they are more
aerodynamic, and hence, offer finer control, tailoring the swats to only
the bare minimum (no pun intended) that are needed. They are certainly
much safer than striking a child in the face with a metal spatula!

Yep, this is why hitting, slapping, etc., lead to relationships breaking up,
parents getting arrested, etc. Instead of Mom slapping you, she should
have told you, "Time for a paddling," and positioned you accordingly. If
you refused, then you would need to have everything that mattered to you
(phone, gaming systems, friends, etc.) removed until you willingly accepted
your punishment, which would need to be augmented due to your initial
defiance. Maybe a "couple (or several?) sets of 3" would be appropriate??
