Good question. But just look at it, it's obviously flat and immobile.
Mebbe we never saw the edge because it just continues on forever
without an edge.

I think that the prevailing belief was that water surrounded all the land,
and no one was willing or able to sail that far to find out. Most voyages
at sea in Antiquity were in sight of land.
