blocked me from going further into science or
engineering. Oddly I "get" computer math and
wound up with a long career in that field. Could
use books to figure out how to encode more
complex math solutions into my code. All hail

Well I started with a slide rule however as soon as everyone in a class could
afford a calculator, we were allowed to use them.
It happened mostly due to donations allowing the school to purchase
calculators for the students to use.

I was in a college 68 years ago that taught those and more.
There were women taking (and passing) the same courses in
many of my classes.

Add in several physics and chemistry courses not to mention
mechanical drawing and a bunch of others I have forgotten.

Hmm ... early Casio sold under non-Japanese-sounding name.
The 10 function keys + pi oughtta cover a lot of needs though.

For programming something that'll cleanly do logical AND/OR/XOR/NAND
and such plus base2/8/10/16 conversions saves a lot of time. Harder
to find is something that will do wide base2 math - at least 32
bits worth. Had to program a 64 bit base2->base10 calc once for
some fan-writ episode of Duke Nukem.

Then there are the HP Reverse-Polish-Notation masochists,
essentially a calculator implementation of the FORTH language :-)

Oh ... one of my favorite movie lines ... German ex-commando
handed something written by Russians. The line was "This is
Cyrillic alphabet - like all the keys you never push on
a calculator !"

Consider too ... the US/EU goes into huge moral angst and
paralysis at the thought of building autonomous mil hunter-
killer drones. Russia and esp China have NO problems with
those. "ID Enemy, KILL Enemy" would be the whole of their
mission. China could pump 'em out by the thousands and
millions. If anybody can figure out how to do the trick
of pin-prick brained flies/mosquitoes that makes 'em
almost impossible to swat ... yikes !

The biggest problem with calculators at my time was the lack of hyperbolic functions.
I eventually graduated to an APF calculator and then to a TI which hada 100% useless
mag strip reader.
It was unreliable at best and the buttons were too stiff.

One kid in my class's father worked for NASA and he had an HP calculator.
We used to play lunar lander on it.

I eventually purchased as my last calculator an HP-41CV with one or two modules.
I still have it but the battery pack leaked so it needs repair.

I have to wonder what will happen to NATO when the enemy attacks?
Unless the various military units are hiding technology, we are not even
close to being prepared.
And my suspicion is it's going to be every country for itself in some massive WW3.
I hope not.

The USA/EU/NATO has fallen WELL behind the curve. We
have reached the point where it's nuke-war or NOTHING,

Have NOT seen any signs of 'secret tech' that could
repel even a non-nuke Russian effort. Once the USSR
fell apart the mindset was "Russia ? No Problem EVER
Again" and they let everything crumble.

Just can't HAVE a WW3 ... wouldn't be anything worth
