A full recharge uses as much

"Fuel - the electricity required to
drive 15,000 miles per year in a
compact electric vehicle costs an
average of $546, while the amount
of gas required to drive the same
distance costs $1,255 (or 130%) more.
Maintenance/Repair/Tires - electric
vehicles do not require as much
maintenance as gas-powered ones since
they don't need oil changes or air-
filter replacements. If maintained
according to the automakers'
recommendations, electric vehicles
cost $330 less than a gas-powered car,
a total of $949/annually."

tyres and brakes still have to be replaced. and probably more frequently
due to EV's being much heavier. the cost of repair is greater, and often
not even possible.

did they factor in purchase price, battery replacement, depreciation and
resale value? it's not just about running cost, but the cost of
ownership overall.

This is true! I did the math when I was thinking about buying a car a few
years ago and electric didn't even come close.

A technology I can accept is hybrid-cars. I think those are the best of
two world as long as the price of hybrid doesn't make it unfeasible, but I
think the prices have come down quite a bit.

yep. I think that's the way car makers will go. it's the best option for
motorists.

I just ran the calculations again on a Volvo XC40 which is available as EV
with a 70 kwh battery and a petrol version with a 54 liter tank. Range of
EV is 460 km, range of petrol is 800 km. These are both marketing figures.

Then to make a fair comparison, I removed tax which is 50% for petrol and
25% for energy.

The price/km was: EV: 0.27 SEK and Petrol: 0.625 SEK.

So a much smaller difference than I would have thought. Note that this car
and these figures are not the latest and greatest model, just the figures
that were the easiest for me to obtain, so I'm 100% sure you can get some
interesting results comparing the latest and greatest _and_ adding a
hybrid into the mix. Also note that this does _not_ take all the other
good arguments against EV into account.

Cost of what repair?

My EV has maybe a dozen or
so moving parts at best. After
five years of driving the only
thing I replaced are tires and
a windshield.

Cheapest car I have ever owned.
No oil changes, no tuneups, no belts
that wear out, no antifreeze, no
stolen catalytic converter. I'll
never go back to gas guzzlers.

That is true. However thanks to
the car being surrounded by cameras
there is no dispute over liability,
the other driver's insurance pays
for it. Also comes in handy when
cops falsely accuse you of running
stop lights and stop signs.

Utter bullshit. When is the last
time you filled up your gas tank for
six bucks?

"If electricity costs 10.7 per kilowatt-hour,
charging an EV with a 200-mile range (assuming
a fully depleted 54 kWh battery) will cost
about $6 to reach a full charge."

Utter bullshit. Power companies
are ENCOURAGING the switch to EV's.

you have to stand a lot longer shivering than we do.. standing in queue
waiting for a charger to be free, and then half an hour to charge up the
car :)

I assume he has a charger in his home garage, and since neither you nor I
have a gasoline pump in our garage, he is happy that we stand outside for
the 3 minutes or so it takes to fill up the car.

This is just my speculation of interpretation of the argument.
