My wife and I just got back from a road trip in which we visited a national park
and two national monuments: Mt. Rushmore, Devils Tower and Little Bighorn
Battlefield. All are well worth a visit. The last, Little Bighorn, was not
exactly on my bucket list, but was on my one liter measuring cup list. But after
visiting it, I realize I underestimated it.

So why does the fake legend of "Custer's Last Stand" loom so large in the
American psyche and history? It's the usual answer: racism. Whites just refused
to believe that a bunch of primitive red savages could defeat our noble brave
white cavalrymen.

The disparity in the number of casualties is staggering. 268 soldiers of the 7th
cavalry were killed, against possibly as few as 60 Lakota and Cheyenne.
Estimates of Native American battle deaths are typically in the 60-100 range,
but it most likely was in the lower end of the range. U.S. cavalrymen apparently
were really shitty marksmen.

There can be no doubt that in making analogies between the Indian Wars and
contemporary events, the U.S. was analogous to today's Russian invaders, and the
Native Americans were analogous to the Ukrainians. The U.S. was not the good
guys, and the Native Americans were.
