A Saint Paul man was sentenced to ten years and five months in state prison on Friday for his role in a robbery and shooting that left a Newport woman critically injured nearly two years ago.

33-year-old Donald Isaiah Ealey was sentenced on Friday after he pled guilty to one count of aiding and abetting 1st-degree assault in exchange for two other counts being dropped. His co-defendant, 39-year-old Justus Rydell Wright, of Buffalo, pled guilty to two felony counts last July and was given more than 14 years in prison.

According to the criminal complaint, deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office were called to an apartment building on 8th Avenue in Newport on May 14, 2022 for a report of a woman who was shot during a robbery.

Deputies arrived and located the victim in the bathroom of the residence, bleeding from the abdomen. She was transported to the hospital where she required emergency surgery and was admitted to the intensive care unit for her injuries.

A male occupant of the apartment told investigators that he was awakened by a knock on the door early that morning. Believing it to be a neighbor or an acquaintance, he opened the door and let in Ealey and Wright. Once inside, the male resident discovered that Ealey was wearing a full facemask, while Wright took out a handgun and began holding it against his head. Hearing the commotion, the female resident came out of the bedroom and approached the suspects. Wright then fired one shot which struck her in the abdomen. Ealey and Wright then moved through the apartment, taking the victims' money, cell phone, and a BB gun before fleeing the scene.

Ealey has previous felony convictions for burglary and drug possession while Wright has previous convictions for crimes ranging from illegal possession of a firearm, burglary, kidnapping and assault.

Donald Trump is so feral and narcissistic, so unrestrained and so outside the
norm of American politics, that he’s difficult to debate. It’s disorienting.
Very few people have been able to stand up to him without being pulled into
the muck. In the past, even when he lost debates on points, he dominated his
opponents.

But on a Tuesday night in Philadelphia, Kamala Harris cracked the code. She
took Trump apart without losing her composure. She worked to insulate
herself
against charges that she’s a left-wing radical, even reminding voters that
she’s a gun owner. Harris succeeded in presenting herself, a sitting vice
president in an unpopular administration, as the change agent. She appealed
to unity, inviting Americans to “turn the page” on a man who belittles the
country and seeks to keep it in a constant state of agitation and chaos. And
she returned time and again to the argument that Trump cares only for
himself, whereas during her career, she’s had only one client: the people.

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - A violent attack on a women's and children’s homeless shelter in north Minneapolis ended with three people injured and a woman in jail facing felony charges.

What we know
The chaotic scene unfolded at St. Anne’s Place shortly after 8 p.m. on Sept. 5. Surveillance video shows a woman approach the front door and start bashing it in with a baseball bat. Another camera caught that same woman repeatedly hitting the side door while four others stood nearby.

Eureka Riser, 33, of Minneapolis, faces riot and property damage charges. Police also announced on Friday night the arrest of a 35-year-old man for his involvement.

Other people seen with her on surveillance video have not been identified.

"One of my staff who was injured who was holding an infant when one of the assailants then bashed the windows with this bat," said Hoang Murphy, CEO of People Serving People, the agency that oversees St. Anne’s.

He said a dispute over a parking spot led to the incident, which injured two guests and an employee.

Another person also pointed a gun at the shelter, prosecutors have said.

Murphy said Riser’s arrest, which happened a week after the attack, should have come sooner.

"I don’t understand why those arrests couldn’t happen in that moment," he said. "We’re the ones who called 911 and they [police] spoke to them first and then they even apologized to them for the broken glass on the sidewalk."

He said the shelter, which is temporarily closed due to safety concerns, is considering installing bullet-resistant glass as well as other security upgrades.

In a statement on Friday, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said: "This violent attack on some of our most vulnerable community members, unhoused women and children, in a place where they had gone to seek shelter and safety cannot be tolerated."
