Donald Trump repeats baseless claim that Justin Trudeau could be the son
of Fidel Castro

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has pumped hot air into an
old, baseless conspiracy theory about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump pumped hot air into an old
and baseless conspiracy theory about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, telling
a controversial internet personality that the Canadian leader could be
the son of former Cuban president Fidel Castro.

In a fawning interview Monday with 24-year-old internet influencer Adin
Ross, Trump rambled on about Democratic rival Kamala Harris and other
leading Democrats, public figures like Elon Musk, Kanye West and Young
Thug, and several world leaders.

Shown a photograph of Trudeau, Trump said, Hes turned very liberal
actually. They say hes the son of Fidel Castro and, uh, could be. I mean
anythings possible in this world, you know.

The Prime Ministers Office did not respond to a request for comment
Tuesday but has in the past denied the debunked claim, which continues to
find traction among conspiracy theorists including Trump supporters that
Trudeau is Castros son.

The former Cuban leader served as an honorary pallbearer for Trudeaus
father, former prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who first visited the
socialist dictator in 1976 with his then-wife Margaret and the couples
third and youngest son, Michel.

Justin Trudeau, born four years earlier, travelled as a young man on
personal visits to Cuba and returned there in November 2016 as Canadian
prime minister, where he drew a contrast between his and Trumps views of
the socialist-led nation.

When Castro died just a few weeks later, Trudeaus statement that called
Castro a legendary revolutionary and orator who made significant
improvements to the education and health-care systems of Cuba and only
vaguely referenced his past as a controversial figure fired up the
conspiracy.

Fact-checking website Snopes reported it first was suggested days later by
a user on the Donald Trump subreddit /r/The_Donald.

Trump did not expand on the Castro claim on Monday.

During the interview that first aired on the livestreaming platform Kick
and racked up more than 1.1 million views on YouTube a day later, Trump
contended that Justin Trudeau is um I get along with him very well
actually, but he seems to be going very progressive and the people of
Canada are not liking it.

Trump then speculated about the prospects for a Conservative leader.

If they had a good conservative person which maybe they do, maybe they
dont, I dont know but, uh, somebody thats a strong conservative would
win Canada. Canada is very unhappy about the way theyve been treated as
people, but I got along with him well.

In the next breath, Trump said of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, Now
this man I got along with really well.

Trump recalled nicknaming the North Korean leader Little Rocket Man, and
said he played Elton Johns song Rocket Man for Kim when they met in
Singapore in 2018.

That was immediately on the heels of Trumps departure from Canada after
the 2018 G7 summit in Charlevoix, when the Canada-U.S. relationship hit a
nadir.

Upon leaving Canada, Trump had furiously tweeted from aboard Air Force One
that Trudeau had made false statements at the close of the G7 summit,
scorned the prime minister as appearing meek and mild in their meetings,
and called him dishonest and very weak. It was a reaction that baffled
the Canadians, but was not the end of the Trump-Trudeau tensions.

Trump and Trudeaus relationship was a rocky and transactional one
throughout Trumps tenure in the White House as the North American free
trade pact was renegotiated, the U.S. imposed steel and aluminum tariffs,
and Trump pressed Canada to increase defence spending.

At a 2019 NATO leaders summit, Trudeau was overheard on a hot mic with
French President Emmanuel Macron, then-U.K. prime minister Boris Johnson
and Dutch leader Mark Rutte appearing to joke about Trump.

After that international ruckus, Trump called Trudeau two-faced but again
said he got along with him.

Why he want to make up a lie like that? What purpose does it serve to denigrate
everybody?

He's an asshole. Pure. Simple. Asshole.

It's part of the zeitgeist now. Deal with it.
