The 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony was filled with memorable moments, from
the lighting of the cauldron to Céline Dion taking the stage.

But one performance has prompted mixed reactions.

The four-hour ceremony kicked off the start of the Summer Games July 26, with
athletes gliding down the River Seine and performers reenacting internationally
historic moments.

During a controversial tableau, drag queens and dancers lined a long table in an
image that some thought resembled Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” portrait
of Jesus Christ and his 12 apostles.

Following the scene, some called the imagery a “mockery” and “insulting to
Christian people.” Meanwhile, others found the moment a celebration for the
LGBTQ+ community and inclusivity.

On July 28, Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps apologized “if people have
taken any offense.”

“Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group.
On the contrary, I think that (artistic director) Thomas Jolly really tried to
celebrate community tolerance,” Descamps said at a press conference. “We believe
that this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offense, we are really
sorry.”

In one scene from the opening ceremony, a dinner platter lifted to show a naked
person painted blue and singing in French. In the background, dancers and drag
queens struck poses along a long table.

Panning through the tableau, a camera first showed a person crowned with an
aureole in front of DJ turntables. The shot then showed the rest of the table,
lined with performers holding their poses.

The table then transformed into a catwalk, as the drag queens and models took
the stage in homage to Paris' fashion scene.

In response to an explosive investigation, top Southern Baptists have
released a previously secret list of hundreds of pastors and other church-
affiliated personnel accused of sexual abuse.

The 205-page database was made public late Thursday. It includes more than
700 entries from cases that largely span from 2000 to 2019.

Its existence became widely known Sunday when the independent firm,
Guidepost Solutions, included it in its bombshell report detailing how the
Southern Baptist Convention's Executive Committee mishandled allegations
of sex abuse, stonewalled numerous survivors and prioritized protecting
the SBC from liability.

Executive Committee leaders Rolland Slade and Willie McLaurin, in a joint
statement, called publishing the list "an initial, but important, step
towards addressing the scourge of sexual abuse and implementing reform in
the Convention."

Church officials kept a private list of abusers, an investigation found

The Guidepost report, released after a seven-month investigation,
contained several explosive revelations. Among them: D. August Boto, the
committee's former vice president and general counsel, and former SBC
spokesman Roger Oldham kept their own private list of abusive ministers.
Both retired in 2019. The existence of the list was not widely known
within the committee and its staff.

"Despite collecting these reports for more than 10 years, there is no
indication that (Oldham and Boto) or anyone else, took any action to
ensure that the accused ministers were no longer in positions of power at
SBC churches," the report said.

The Executive Committee did not make additions to the published list, but
their attorneys did redact several entries as well as the names and
identifying information of survivors and others unrelated to the accused,
Thursday's joint statement said.

They made public "entries that reference an admission, confession, guilty
plea, conviction, judgment, sentencing, or inclusion on a sex offender
registry," and expect some of the redacted entries on the list to be made
public once more research is done. The list also includes Baptist
ministers that are not affiliated with the SBC.

Survivors and advocates have long called for a public database of abusers.
The creation of an "offender information system" was one of the key
recommendations in the report by Guidepost, which was contracted by the
Executive Committee after delegates to last year's national meeting
pressed for an outside investigation.

Also in the report was a shocking allegation that Johnny Hunt, a Georgia-
based pastor and former SBC president, sexually assaulted another pastor's
wife during a beach vacation in 2010. Hunt has disputed the allegation,
saying in a statement that he has "never abused anybody."

He resigned May 13 as senior vice president of evangelism and leadership
at the North American Mission Board, the SBC's domestic missions agency.
On Wednesday, NAMB leaders announced changes to address the issue
including committing to investigate abuse accusations and creating an
Abuse Prevention and Response Committee to assess and strengthen existing
policies and procedures.

Also in the wake of the report's release, survivors have been calling in
information about abuse allegations to the Executive Committee, Guidepost
and members of a task force set up to oversee the firm's investigation,
according to a joint statement from the three entities.

Callers will be provided with care options and connected with an advocate,
the statement said.

described the hotline as a "stopgap measure for survivors" until delegates
can pass reforms during this year's national meeting scheduled for June
14-15 in Anaheim, California.

The task force expects to make its formal motions based on the Guidepost
report public next week. Those recommendations will then be presented for
a vote in Anaheim.

American Christianity is simply a cover for

The Clergy raping children is no longer just for Catholic priests.

The clergy sex abuse scandal has focused attention on the widespread and
systemic sexual abuse of children by priests.

But child sexual abuse is not just a Catholic problem.

The Catholic Church - with scandals out of the Boston and Philadelphia
archdioceses, to name just two - has been at the center of child sexual
abuse, but in recent years a number of horrific cases of child sex abuse
has served to focus attention that it is a non-discriminating scourge.

Studies show that one in 10 children are sexually abused before their 18th
birthday. It ranks the second most costly victim crime - second only to
murder.

Predatory priests

The arrest last week of Father David Poulson, of the Diocese of Erie, once
again focused attention on pedophilia in the Catholic Church.

More than 10,000 Catholic priests have been credibly accused of child
molestation and rape - an average of 228 cases per year since the 1950s.

But the Catholic Church, in fact, is not an outlier.

Abuse across Protestant churches

Child sex abuse happens across Protestant and evangelical churches - and,
at times, at a higher rate.

An investigation by The Associated Press recently found three insurance
companies in the United States that provide liability coverage for 165,000
Protestant churches typically receive 260 reports every year of children
being sexually abused by Protestant clergy or other staff.

In 2013, Boz Tchividjian, a Liberty University law professor, said the
Christian mission field is a "magnet" for sexual abusers.

Tchividjian, a grandson of the late evangelist the Rev. Billy Graham,
excoriated evangelicals for turning a blind eye to abuse among their
ranks.

The Presbyterian Church

In recent years, the Presbyterian Church, one of the most progressive
mainline denominations, has been rocked by child sexual abuse cases. The
majority of cases involved the children of missionaries serving overseas
from the 1950s to 1990.

In the wake of mounting allegations, the church commissioned an
independent panel to investigate the reports. The panel found that at
least nine individuals, including ministers ordained with the
denomination, had abused children.

A similar investigation in 2002 found "overwhelming" evidence that at
least 22 girls and women had been sexually abused by a Presbyterian
minister and missionary over a 40-year period.

The abuse took place in Africa and the United States.

Southern Baptists

A survey by the Journal of Pastoral Care in 1993 found that 14 percent of
Southern Baptist ministers said they had engaged in "inappropriate sexual
behavior."

By 2000, a report to the Baptist General Convention found the incidence of
sexual abuse by clergy had reached "horrific proportions." Victims
advocates have derided church leadership for protecting predators and
covering up crimes.

In 2016 the Southern Baptist Convention elected Steve Gaines as its
president. A few years earlier, Gaines, at the time head of a Memphis,
Tennessee, church was implicated in clergy child molestation case.
Investigators said Gaines knew for years that one of his ministers had
sexually molested a child. Gaines neither reported the crime to police or
his congregation, police said.

Jehovah's Witnesses

Leaked internal documents this year catapulted the Jehovah's Witnesses
church unto the child sex crimes roster.

The insular church discouraged victims of sexual abuse from reporting the
abuse, the documents showed.

The leaked documents exposed sexual abuse accusations from three accusers
against a member of the church. The documents outline the efforts by the
church to cover up the scandal and keep it from the "worldly court of
law."

Since the news broke, hundreds of church members have come forward with
their own accounts of abuse. Attorneys believe there are thousands of
victims involved.

Predators: not so much pastors but volunteers

The majority of accused predators in faith settings are not clergy or
staff but church volunteers.

That is according to the Christian Ministry Resources, which serves more
than 75,000 congregations and 1,000 denominational agencies nationwide.

Annual surveys from the organization suggest that in recent years, the
pace of child-abuse allegations against American churches has averaged 70
a week.

Ultra-orthodox Jews

The New York community of ultra-Orthodox Jews has faced a backlash for
asking observant Jews to consult a rabbi instead of going immediately to
police with evidence of child sexual abuse.

Similar cases have sprung in other cities, including Baltimore and Miami,
involving allegations of sexual misconduct by orthodox Jewish leaders.

The case involving Rabbi Shmuel Krawatsky, formerly of the Beth Tfiloh
Dahan Community School in Baltimore, involves the alleged abuse of at
least three boys at a summer camp.

According to a report by The Jewish Week, the rabbi, who was naked and
alone in a pool changing room with two alleged victims, touched the boys
inappropriately before asking them to touch his "private parts" in
exchange for $100."

The report also states that the rabbi threatened the young boys not to
tell their parents.

Given the faith's shroud of secrecy there is no hard data regarding the
number of potential abuse victims in the Orthodox Jewish community.
Experts estimate that there could be thousands of victims dating back
decades.

The principle of mesirah forbids reporting a Jewish practitioner to
secular authorities. Issues are supposed to be handled internally within
the greater faith community.

Dennis Hastert

In 2016, Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the
House in U.S. history, was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for
structuring payouts in order to cover up the sexual abuses he perpetrated
as a wrestling coach in Illinois decades ago.

"The thing I want to do is say I'm sorry to those I've hurt and misled.
They looked at me and I took advantage of them," Hastert told a judge.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin called Hastert "a serial child
molester."

Hastert was released last year from a federal prison in Minnesota after
serving nearly 13 months.

The former Republican powerhouse was ordered to serve two years of
court-ordered supervised release .

Jerry Sandusky

Former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky is serving up to 60 years
in prison for sexually abusing 10 boys between 1994 and 2009.

Sandusky targeted his victims from among the boys who attended his Second
Mile camp, a charity that he ran for at-risk youth. He was convicted of 45
of 48 counts of child sexual abuse against young boys from the charity

Banned swimming coaches

Approximately 150 youth swimming coaches have been banned for life as a
result of credible child sex crimes allegations against them.

In 2010, Andy King, a coach with a California aquatics club, was charged
with 20 counts of lewd acts with girls 15 and younger. He was sentenced to
40 years in prison for molesting girls training with the San Jose Aquatics
Club. King was alleged to have impregnated one of his victims when she was
14.

In 2008, Central Indiana Aquatics coach Brian Hindson was accused of
setting up hidden cameras in locker rooms. He pleaded guilty to charges
including distribution, production and possession of child pornography and
was sentenced to 33 years in prison.

A coach who failed to step up

Chuch Wielgus, who served as executive director of USA Swimming for nearly
20 years, came under fire for his handling of sex abuse cases..

In 2014, more than four years after rebuking culpability, Wielgus
apologized to victims and acknowledged that he should have done more to
protect athletes.

He wrote in a blog post: "I wish my eyes had been more open to the
individual stories of the horrors of sexual abuse. I wish I had known more
so perhaps I could have done more."

Wielgus died in 2017.

Millions of children abused by teachers

Schools are supposed to be a safe environment for children, but they can
actually be one of the most dangerous places for children with regards to
sexual abuse.

A study commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education found that up to
7 percent of all middle and high school students were the targets of
physical sexual abuse by teachers, coaches and other adults working in the
school system.

That statistic puts the number of young teens sexually abused by teachers
and other school adults in the millions.

Southern Baptist Convention leaders mishandled abuse allegations, report
finds

In the summer of 2010, a pastor and his wife at First Baptist Church in
Woodstock, Georgia, said they received an invite to vacation in Florida
with Johnny Hunt, a senior pastor of their church whom they considered a
mentor.

The 55-year-old church leader had been elected national president of the
Southern Baptist Convention two years earlier, making him one of the most
powerful members of the largest denomination of Protestants in the U.S.

Hunt allegedly helped to book them a place in Panama City Beach that,
unbeknownst to them, was directly beside his unit in the same condo
complex, the unnamed young couple said in a 288-page blockbuster
investigative report released Sunday by the Southern Baptist Convention.
When the pastor�s wife arrived alone after a day out, she said she was
greeted by Hunt, and they interacted from their respective balconies.

But when she invited him inside her condo to escape the heat and continue
their conversation, during which she said she opened up about the stress
she and her husband were under at the church, he became aggressive, she
said to investigators, as detailed in the report. According to her, he
pulled down her shorts, made sexual remarks about her body, and then pinned
her to the couch and pulled up her shirt. She said in the report that he
groped her and sexually assaulted her with his hands and mouth.

Moments later, she said in the report, Hunt � who is married with two adult
daughters close to her age � texted her to come out to her balcony to
discuss what had happened. Instead of an apology, she said, he made a
proposition that they have sex three times a day.

Hunt did not immediately return a request for comment Monday about the
allegations, but in a statement posted on Twitter following the report�s
release, he denied its contents while also saying he had not yet read the
findings in their entirety.

�To put it bluntly: I vigorously deny the circumstances and
characterizations set forth in the Guidepost report. I have never abused
anybody,� he wrote.

The report detailed widespread allegations of sexual misconduct among named
clergy and a cover-up involving the upper echelons of the Southern Baptist
Convention.

The denomination's executive committee contracted an outside firm,
Guidepost Solutions, an independent consultant that conducts investigations
on behalf of faith-based organizations, to launch an inquiry after
delegates voted overwhelmingly for one last summer.

In its wake, Ronnie Floyd, a Southern Baptist Convention president from
2014 to 2016, resigned in October as head of the executive committee.

The report also goes over several reforms the church could implement,
including creating and maintaining an �Offender Information System� to
alert the community to alleged offenders, and restricting the use of
nondisclosure agreements and civil settlements that bind accusers to
confidentiality in sexual abuse matters.

A church task force will present its own recommendations based on the
report during its annual meeting next month in Anaheim, California.

Already, the reaction from some prominent leaders of the Southern Baptist
Convention and followers has centered on a demand for sweeping changes that
ensure the accused are not protected and the abused are not silenced.

�What was published is heartbreaking, with some parts just horrifying,�
tweeted J.D. Greear, a North Carolina pastor and Southern Baptist
Convention president from 2018 to 2021 who has spoken in support of sex
abuse victims. �We have no choice but to learn from our past and change the
future.�

In response to the report, current Southern Baptist Convention President Ed
Litton said in a statement Sunday that there �are not adequate words to
express my sorrow at the things revealed in this report� and that Southern
Baptists �must resolve to change our culture and implement desperately
needed reforms.�

Litton could not be reached Monday for further comment.

Another leader of the denomination, Kevin Ezell, the president of the
Southern Baptist Convention�s North American Mission Board, said he was
unaware of any misconduct allegations against Hunt, who resigned from a
leadership position with the board more than a week ago.

�I learned the details of the report today along with the rest of our
Southern Baptist family,� Ezell said, adding that the details in the report
are �egregious and deeply disturbing.�

He said he declined to speak publicly about Hunt�s resignation until after
the Guidepost report was released �out of respect for the investigation.�

Neither the woman who accused Hunt of misconduct nor her pastor husband
were named in the Guidepost report, which comes after a 2019 investigation
by the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News documenting two
decades worth of cases, in which pastors and deacons in Southern Baptist
churches allegedly abused hundreds of people while for the most part
remaining in their posts. In response to the newspapers� report, church
leaders pledged to protect victims and bring about change.

According to Guidepost investigators, Hunt gave an �unusual amount of
attention� to the pastor�s wife while at the church and �groomed the couple
with flattery and promises of help in ministry.�

The investigators said they interviewed other witnesses who helped
corroborate the pastor and his wife�s allegations, including a counseling
minister at First Baptist Church who confirmed being present for a session
between Hunt and the couple, during which, he said, Hunt admitted to the
woman�s husband that he sexually assaulted her. At that meeting, the couple
also said Hunt stated, �Thank God I didn�t consummate the relationship,�
according to the report.

Hunt also did not immediately respond to a request for comment about their
accusations.

The alleged �survivor states that at the time she believed that, even
though she did not consent to what Dr. Hunt did to her, she was made to
feel it was consensual because she did not fight back,� the report said.

In addition, Guidepost investigators said the counseling minister told them
that he remembered Hunt saying that �if this (story) got out, it could
negatively impact 40,000 churches.�

The investigators said they interviewed Hunt twice, and during the second
occasion he acknowledged he had known the younger pastor and considered
himself a �strong influence� on his life. Initially, investigators said,
Hunt did not recall spending any personal time with the couple nor inviting
them to Panama City Beach but later remembered seeing the pastor�s wife on
the neighboring balcony but had �no contact whatsoever.�

�He also restated that it was not true that he was on the balcony or in the
condo,� the report said. �When asked specifically about whether he kissed
her, pulled at her shorts, or fondled her, he said no. He denied sexualized
comments about her appearance, panties, tan lines, or perfume.�

The Guidepost report goes on to mention other cases in which church leaders
are accused of concealing wrongdoing. They include top leaders at
Prestonwood Baptist Church in suburban Dallas, one of the largest churches
in the country, allegedly protecting a music director accused of abuse in
the 1980s and failing to notify police.

The music minister, John Langworthy, was �quietly fired� and moved to
Mississippi, �where, in 2011, he confessed to his congregation at Morrison
Heights Baptist Church in Clinton that he had committed �sexual
indiscretions� with teenage boys during his time at Prestonwood and before
when he was in Mississippi,� according to the report.

Langworthy pleaded guilty to five counts of gratification of lust related
to incidents in Mississippi from 1980 to 1984 and was sentenced in 2013 to
a total of 50 years but avoided prison under a plea deal. He died in 2019.

In a statement, Prestonwood Baptist denied how the Guidepost report
characterized the situation and said the church has �never protected or
supported abusers, in 1989 or since.�

Throughout the report, churchgoers who say they were abused by clergy at
various Southern Baptist churches across the country told investigators how
they were repeatedly stonewalled in their efforts to be heard.

PHOENIX –David Michael Hanson, 41, of Phoenix, was arrested on Wednesday
for making online threats against the President and Vice-President.
Hanson was charged by Federal criminal complaint on Tuesday with five
counts of Threats Against the President and Successors to the Presidency
and five counts of Interstate Communication of Threats.

The complaint alleges that in November and December of 2023, while
living in Arizona, Hanson used a social media platform to post threats
to murder the President and Vice President of the United States. On
November 19, 2023, Hanson posted online a series of threatening
statements including one that stated, “#joeAndKamala I’m asking you to
resign on Monday your alternative is death brutally murdered.” After the
U.S. Secret Service spoke to Hanson and warned him that it was a Federal
crime to post such threats, on December 23, 2023, Hanson posted another
series of similar threats aimed at the President and Vice-President.

Each count of Threats Against the President and Successors to the
Presidency carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine of
up to $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release. Each count
of Interstate Communication of Threats carries a maximum sentence of
five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to three years of
supervised release.

A complaint is simply a method by which a person is charged with
criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is
presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes
guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
