The standard Christian explanation is that evil has to be allowed to
show that Satan's ways are wrong, so that the rebellion against God
fomented by Satan can be properly ended with fairness to everyone
involved.

There are two problems with this explanation:

1) It assumes human beings must be retards of the first magnitude.
One *century* of evil should have been way more than necessary to
achieve the goal of describing Satan accurately, not six *thousand*
years. If God existed, it would be appropriate to say to him, "All
right, all right, Satan = bad; we get it! Now be reasonable and end
the evil!"

2) It fails to explain the *magnitude* of the evil involved. If God
wanted to demonstrate that Satan was wrong, he didn't need to pull
billions and billions of humans and animals into it. Just restrict
the experiment to just Adam and Eve and a few select creatures, and
use that for his lesson study.
