Alec Baldwin shot and killed that cinematographer. Did he commit a crime? Maybe,
but that avenue has been closed off because of prosecutorial misconduct. Did he
commit a wrongful act — a tort — for which he might be held liable? Very
possibly. They are two entirely separate questions and issues. Note that most
civil suits don't involve any potential criminal dimension whatsoever. Say, you
have a bad car accident and injure someone and destroy the other car, and the
injured parties sue you and you're found to be liable. You won't get anywhere
saying, "Well, the police and district attorney cleared me of any criminal
culpability and I was never charged with a crime, so it's 'unfair' to sue me for
damages." No, that's not how it works. That has *never* been how it works.
