Medical providers and public health experts worry that the health care system is
poorly equipped to handle the influx.

By Noah Weiland

Reporting from the emergency department of the University of New Mexico Hospital
in Albuquerque
July 12, 2024 | Updated 1:48 p.m. ET

On a recent Friday in Albuquerque, as triple-digit temperatures stretched into
the evening, a 69-year-old man collapsed in his home. His body temperature hit
107.7 degrees by the time emergency responders whisked him to the University of
New Mexico Hospital.

Nurses and emergency physicians began a process that has become familiar,
preparing a device the size of a mini-fridge that rapidly cools and regulates
body temperature by funneling cold fluids to pads that cover a patient’s abdomen
and thighs. Workers dumped ice on his body as part of a last-ditch effort to
curtail his heatstroke.

It was too late. The man’s blood pressure had plummeted, and he suffered a heart
attack. Less than 24 hours later, he was dead.

Extreme heat, intensified by climate change, has blanketed much of the United
States this summer, killing more than a dozen people in Oregon in recent days.
Large parts of California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah have been under excessive
heat warnings, which local officials believe contributed to more than 90 deaths
in the West this month.

There wouldn't *be* as many heat-related emergencies if shithole red state
shitbags like DeSantis and Abbott stopped prohibiting local governments from
mandating water breaks.

Why do shithole red state voters (e.g. spammy) keep electing murderous shitbag
governors who want to kill the states' residents?

What's Newsom's excuse? There are more deaths per 100,000 in your state
than Florida.

Because hardly any of it was going to the border.

That's how you see it. Like I said. There are laws. Entry points only.

That's how it is NOW! Wtf, you think they're going to say, "Ok. Only cross at bridge.
Got it!" and comply? How are you going to prevent illegal crossings *between* entry
points?
>> Trump asked for wall money and Republicans told him no.
>> Biden asked for border security money and Republicans told him no.

That was the reason they gave for refusing his first request for more money to expedite
deportations.

You've been fed so many tales by right wing media you can't keep your stories straight.
>> Dunno about you man, but it sounds like the Republicans don't want the border sealed.
>.
>That's how you see it.

That's how it is. The GOP won't seal the border, won't hire more guards, won't expedite
deportations and in fact put a full stop on ANY attempt to control illegal immigration.
And they always have some lame excuse for doing *nothing*. Here's the thing though, you
gotta do *something*. And then you do something else and then something else after that.
Eventually the problem gets solved or at least mitigated.

If all you ever do is *nothing*, you'll never accomplish *anything*.

>Like I said. There are laws. Entry points only.
>Anything else is trespassing.

I have no problem with that at all. We need to expand the entries, maybe an Ellis Island
program paid for with fees to process them faster, legally and put them on the grid with
fingerprints, DNA and official federal ID. Charge them $500 to apply for admission.
Couple days to process, create their ID and work permits, put 'em up in dormitories but
charge them for food.

That way we won't have millions of untraceable aliens in the country. At least we'll be
able to track them electronically through bank, employer, rental history and other
records. The police would love to be able to trace them!

Bottom line. They're coming anyway and we've already seen we can't stop them. Might as
well make a buck off it.

"Now Playing! America the Beautiful! Adults $500, children 12 and under $250. Buy a
concession ticket book for 10% off food!"

So what's 8,000,000 immigrants times $500? Four *billion* dollars! Hell, charge 'em a
thousand. That's not too much for admission to the greatest country in the world.

Well the wall is a good start.
Deporting anyone found illegally on this side of the border would greatly
benefit.
Automatic denial of refugee status to anyone that enters at other than a
port of entry and subsequent deportation.
You know.. actually enforcing our laws.

> Trump asked for wall money and Republicans told him no.

Well, Democrats told him no... so he came up with the money and built a lot
of the wall on the border despite Congress. Which has been shown to be
effective.

> Biden asked for border security money and Republicans told him no.

After asserting that he wouldn't build even a foot of wall.

Seems even Biden agrees:
1) That border security is needed
2) Walls do work to help in border security.

Further, it wasn't that he asked for such money, it's just that Democrats
tied so much other stupid spending to it that it would be irresponsible to
pass it with all that junk attached to it.

> Dunno about you man, but it sounds like the Republicans don't want the
> border sealed.

Sure we do. We just don't want to spend a ton of money on stupid Democrat
projects while doing it.
