Trump Still Faces 54 More Felony Charges After Hush Money Verdict
May 31, 2024,05:32am EDT

Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 felony charges Thursday, becoming the
first former or sitting president to ever be convicted on criminal
chargesbut those counts could be the first of many, as he still faces an
additional 54 felony charges against him in his three remaining criminal
cases.

Money Trial

Key Facts

A 12-person jury found Trump guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying
business records as part of his Manhattan criminal case, which was based on
reimbursement checks Trump sent to ex-attorney Michael Cohen after Cohen
paid adult film star Stormy Daniels $130,000 before the 2016 election to
silence her allegations of having an affair with Trump.

Federal Election Case (4 charges): Trump has been indicted on four counts
in the federal case charging him for his efforts trying to overturn the
2020 election, including for conspiracy to defraud the U.S., conspiracy to
obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an
official proceeding and conspiracy against rightsa law that was originally
created to prosecute members of the Ku Klux Klan but has more recently been
used for election crimes.

Federal Classified Documents Case (40 charges): Trump was indicted on 40
felony counts in Florida for allegedly mishandling White House documents
that he brought back to Mar-a-Lago and allegedly obstructing the
governments investigation into them, facing charges for the willful
retention of national defense information, obstruction, concealing
documents and making false statements and representations.

Georgia Election Case (10 charges): Trump was initially indicted on 13
felony charges in Georgia for his efforts to overturn the 2020
electionpart of a sprawling alleged racketeering conspiracy with 18 of his
allies also indictedbut Judge Scott McAfee threw out six charges,
including three against Trump, in March, though prosecutors are appealing
to have them reinstated.

Trump still faces charges for racketeering, conspiracy to commit
impersonating a public officer, conspiracy to commit forgery, false
statements and writings and filing false documents; the dropped charges
were all for solicitation of violation of oath by a public officer, which
were based on Trumps call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad
Raffensperger in which he asked Raffensperger to find enough votes to
secure Trumps win in the state.

What We Dont Know

When any of Trumps remaining cases will go to trial. Both the Georgia case
and the documents case are indefinitely delayed: Trump and his co-
defendants are appealing a ruling in the Georgia case over whether Fulton
County District Attorney Fani Willis should be disqualified, which will
likely take a while to play out, and U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon,
whos overseeing the documents case, indefinitely delayed that trial after
pushing back a series of deadlines in the case. Trumps federal election
case is paused pending a ruling from the Supreme Court, which is
considering whether Trumps charges should be thrown out because of
presidential immunity. A ruling is expected by the end of June and the
case can get back on track if justices rule against Trumpthough given how
long the dispute has already taken to play out, legal experts believe its
now unlikely there would be a verdict in the case before Election Day in
November.
Chief Critic

Trump has pleaded not guilty in all of the criminal cases against him,
insisting that the charges are all witch hunts designed to harm his
presidential campaign. Following his guilty verdict on Thursday, Trump told
reporters he is a very innocent man, decrying the case as rigged and a
disgrace. The real verdict is going to be November 5 by the people,
Trump told reporters.
Key Background

Trump was found guilty on Thursday following nearly six weeks of trial
proceedings, as witnesses including Cohen, Daniels, former Trump aide Hope
Hicks and ex-National Enquirer publisher David Pecker were all called to
the stand. Cohen, serving as the trials key witness, testified Trump
personally knew about and approved his payment to Daniels in the leadup to
the 2016 campaign, and was directly involved with the scheme to reimburse
him. Trump sent Cohen reimbursement checks for $35,000 each throughout
2017, which prosecutors argued were falsely labeled as being for legal
services. Trumps lawyers maintained Trump did nothing wrong, distancing
him from the hush money scheme and arguing the checks were properly labeled
because Cohen was serving as Trumps attorney at the time. They also sought
to attack Cohens credibility, with Trump attorney Todd Blanche cross-
examining him for three days and emphasizing Cohens history of lying under
oath. Ultimately, those arguments did not affect the jurys verdict, and
jurors reached their verdict after two days of deliberations, finding Trump
guilty on every charge he was indicted on.
