The state superintendent, Ryan Walters, said the Bible was a “necessary
historical document.” The mandate comes as part of a conservative movement to
infuse Christian values in public schools.

By Sarah Mervosh and Elizabeth Dias

Sarah Mervosh covers education, and Elizabeth Dias covers religion.

June 27, 2024

Oklahoma’s state superintendent on Thursday directed all public schools to teach
the Bible, including the Ten Commandments, in an extraordinary move that blurs
the lines between religious instruction and public education.

The superintendent, Ryan Walters, who is a Republican, described the Bible as an
“indispensable historical and cultural touchstone” and said it must be taught in
certain, unspecified grade levels.

The move comes a week after Louisiana became the first state to mandate that
public schools display the Ten Commandments in every classroom, which was
quickly challenged in court.

This, too, will fail — as it should. The "Bible" absolutely will *not* be
"taught" in public schools.

I would bet that even the current Court would not go for it (although,
Thomas/Gorsuch/Alito would).

What I would like to know is what does teaching the Bible mean in practice?

I tend to think it's a device to attract attention. I can't believe
his board is letting him do it. It's gonna be a lightning rod for
litigation... and Oklahoma is at the bottom of the list in funding
education. OK teachers haven't seen a pay raise in a month of
Sundays. Their lawyers will make out like rats!

Right now, it's just a plan. I doubt it'll make it through the
curriculum committee.

The state superintendent, Ryan Walters, said the Bible was a “necessary historical
document.”

It's not. It's a Jewish collection of myths about *their* history of the period. For
some of it there is archeological evidence, for the great majority, there is none.

It used to be along with the Pledge of Allegiance. The United States
was a much stronger and more civilized place to live when they were.

Democrat communists have done their absolute best to destroy the
Republic of the United States of America.

Excellent! Now there's a Libertarian utopia! They can repurpose the
football field for public crucifixions of all pedophile priests and
ministers, and state superintendents as well!

Justice Clarence Thomas says that since stonings and crucifixions are part of
America's biblical history and traditions, they are constitutional and should
be used exclusively on those who disobey the 10 Commandments with no
exception.

This means that Trump will not be attending any high school ceremonies in
Oklahoma in the near future for he has broken many of the 10 and is going to
HELL!

In a matter of time all children and adults will be tested on their knowledge
of the 10 in both common American and original Hebrew languages.

Failing marks will end up being stoned.

I can see the argument that the student of history should look at the
theological beliefs of the founders (e.g.: the Biblical justification
for slavery); however, I'd put that in a graduate curriculum,
definitely not K-12.

In public education, for something to become an essential element, it
has to go through the curriculum committee to be described formally
and have evaluation instruments (i.e.: tests) developed. A
superintendent has administrative authority; however, he or she cannot
*make* policy by directive.

When was the Bible taught in American schools?

While the fascist religious have been busy doing the same.
